What is a bitcoin?

A bitcoin is a unit of currency, like a dollar or a euro. But it’s completely digital and can be used almost anywhere in the world.

It was created in 2009 by someone who referred to themselves as Satoshi Nakamoto.

Bitcoin has been called digital gold, and for good reason. To date, the total value of all bitcoins mined stands at over $369.05B+ USD.

Like gold, bitcoin is scarce (only 21 million will ever be mined), fungible, divisible, and durable.

These properties make it useful as a form of money that can also be used as a store of value... but unlike gold, you can send bitcoins to anyone in the world instantly without having to physically transfer them! You just need an internet connection.
